The ’season to be jolly’ is coming up and many commercials on TV are now advertising for gifts. I don’t watch TV all that often but I was watching a few shows today and couldn’t help but get frustrated by all of the jewelry commercials. All of them repeated the same message: “There is no better way to show that you love her by giving her diamonds”.
Okay, I can think of countless better ways to show a girl you love her without buying her an overly expensive gift. Here are a few: Always being there for her, listening to her, cheering her up when she’s sad, spending time with her, etc.
These types of advertisements makes society think that if you love a girl you must buy her jewelry – the same goes for flowers. Sure, these commercials are for the benefit of the company, but it’s seriously brainwashing people to believe that it is the only way to a woman’s heart.
I dated this guy that would buy me flowers all the time. He’d buy them for me on holidays, or even when we got into arguments. I always accepted the flowers and thanked him because it was a sweet gesture, but time again I would tell him to not buy me flowers because they are expensive and they will eventually die. I always stressed that I would much rather appreciate something more personal:maybe a drawing [he liked to draw]. Or if he really insisted on buying me something, then buy me something I can use over again. But, he always bought me flowers because that was the ‘romantic’ thing to do.
To be honest, I do not like flowers. I really don’t. Not all girls like to be given flowers and/or diamonds. When I get married, I do not want to get a big expensive ring with diamonds on it. A nice silver band will do. That’s just who I am. A lot of girls probably feel the same way, but again, people are brainwashed by these stupid commercials and it shapes society.
Don’t get me wrong, if a guy buys me flowers or diamonds in the future, I’m not going to throw it in his face and get angry. I will graciously accept it and be happy because it’s the thought that counts, but honestly, I wish people would just wake up from this dream that all girls love to be given flowers and diamonds.
You are awesome and I totally agree with everything you said.
You present your thoughts in a clear, precise well thought out manner, and I really respect that, as opposed to people who just randomly shout outbursts of “UR stupid because u don”t like the same stuf as mee!!!!”. Those people appear to be banging their heads on the keyboard.
Anyway, I subscribed to your blog.
